7 Reasons to Switch to Organic Tampons

7 Reasons to Switch to Organic Tampons

Reduce your risk of (1) cancer, (2) endometriosis, (3) fibroids, (4) yeast infections, (5) pelvic inflammatory disease, (6) PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and (7) go green; help the environment.

Most tampons are made from a cotton or rayon-cotton blend. Rayon is a synthetic fiber that is made from wood pulp. It is highly absorbent and it does a good job.

We all think of cotton as a so-called natural fiber but have no idea that it has been bio-engineered and is grown with an array of pesticides, fertilizers and fungicides. In fact, 25% of the world’s pesticides are sprayed on cotton (that is a lot of pesticide).  Five of the top nine pesticides used on cotton in the U.S. (cyanide, dicofol, naled, propargite, and trifluralin) are KNOWN cancer-causing chemicals. All nine are classified by the U.S. EPA as Category I and II— the most dangerous chemicals. Low levels of these pesticides remain in the cotton, even after treatment. (For more information on cotton go to http://www.ecochoices.com/1/cotton_statistics.html )

Another risk to women’s health is posed by highly toxic dioxin, a by-product of the chlorine bleaching process historically used to make tampon fibers white.  And even though this process has been improved to try and eliminate dioxins, above trace levels are still being found. There is no “safe” dose of dioxin, which accumulates in fat cells over time.  Even one millionth of a gram can kill a guinea pig.

Other health issues arise from the toxic fibers that remain behind even after the tampon has been removed.

Given that on average women use between 9,000 and 11,000 tampons in a lifetime, which is a lot of toxic exposure to delicate membranes; isn’t it time you switched to organic tampons?

I have used tampon products for years and did not make the switch to organic tampons until several years ago. I had to experiment with a few brands until I found one I could be happy with. I believe the absence of rayon makes these products a little less absorbent but not by much.  The most effective brand I have found is made by Natracare.

Natracare “regular” and “super” absorbency organic tampons are available for your convenience through our Online Store HERE.
