Glutathione: The Mother of All Antioxidants

I am sure you have heard of “glutathione”, but do you know what it is, how important it is and how to help your own body make more?

What is Glutathione?What is Glutathione?

Oxidants are free radical damage or toxins that can cause cell damage.  An antioxidant can neutralize the oxidants and thus protect your cells from being damaged.

The left side of this apple is protected with lemon juice (an antioxidant) and the right side is damage from oxidation.

It’s the most important molecule you need to stay healthy and prevent disease. It’s the secret to prevent aging, cancer, heart disease, dementia and more, and necessary to treat everything from autism to Alzheimer’s disease.

low glutathione

The good news is that your body produces its own glutathione. The bad news is that poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections and radiation all deplete your glutathione.

This leaves you susceptible to unrestrained cell disintegration from oxidative stress, free radicals, infections and cancer. And your liver gets overloaded and damaged, making it unable to do its job of detoxification.

You can’t SWALLOW A CAPSULE OF GLUTATHIONE; you need proper nutrition to make Glutathione in your body.

Daily Essential Nutrients That Boost Glutathione Production

significance of glutathione

  1. MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane)

This naturally occurring sulfur is a key compound in glutathione. It must be present in the body for the liver to make its own powerful antioxidant, Glutathione. (which is one of the hundreds of reasons I have included MSM in my Total Health Packs).  You can also purchase it separately.

  1. In order to produce Glutathione, you need adequate supplies of selenium, B1, B2, B6, vitamin B12, folic acid, omega 3, vitamin C and vitamin E. These nutrients are all included in my Total Health Packs.

I mention the above FIRST because without these nutrients, you won’t get near the benefit in adding the following known glutathione “boosters”. And with these nutrients, you will already be boosting your glutathione.

Once you have your “essential daily nutrients” handled by taking one Total Health Pack (or twice a day), then you can choose from the most powerful glutathione boosters below.

  1. Top of the list is NAC (N-Acetyl-Cysteine)

This acetylated form of cysteine is a precursor to glutathione. NAC can boost glutathione levels in cells. The acetylated form of L-cysteine is more efficiently absorbed and used.

  1. Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Sometimes called lipoic acid, it is important for recycling glutathione and restoring sufficient levels. Getting therapeutic amounts from a supplement can help build glutathione and provides additional antioxidant benefits: Lipoic acid helps recycle other antioxidants like vitamins C and E as well as being its own antioxidant.

  1. Milk Thistle

Helps your body make its own glutathione and it increases the production of new liver cells to replace the damaged old ones.

  1. High-Quality, Un-Denatured Whey Protein Powder

This provides the correct glutathione-building amino acids, the sulfur-containing amino acids cysteine and methionine, as well as molecules with specific physiological benefits like immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, and alpha-lactalbumin to boost glutathione levels.

Our Absolute Whey Protein (sold in our online store) is a bit more money than other big box store brands, but you get what you pay for.  It is free of Bovine Growth Hormones and sourced from pasture raised cows in New Zealand. Because whey is easily denatured at high temperatures, I prefer cold-processed whey to keep the protein intact until it reaches your digestive system.
