MSM Too Good To Be True

Normally when it seems too good to be true, it is.  

In my 35 years in the health industry, I have found very few products that can actually deliver on all their claims…  but MSM can!

How Does MSM Do All of This?

MSM stands for methyl-sulfonyl-methane (now you know why we shorten it to MSM).

MSM is a naturally occurring sulfur that is present in every cell of your body. MSM is not the odorous, inorganic sulfur that you find in hot springs, and it isn’t sulfa or sulfites, so you can’t be allergic to it.

Sulfur is an important substance in the creation and regeneration of all your body tissues.

Our bodies are producing new cells 24 hours per day. Vitamins and amino acids work with MSM during this process.  If your body doesn’t receive the proper nutrition and building materials it needs, it will produce dysfunctional cells. Without proper levels of MSM our bodies are unable to create healthy new cells.

Sulfur must be present for collagen to be produced, making it a vital component in the formation of cartilage and connective tissues.

Sulfur helps to form the keratin that is required for healthy, strong hair and nails.

Sulfur forms the flexible bonds between proteins, which helps build and maintain supple, well hydrated skin cells. This results in smoother healthier skin (ladies, this means LESS WRINKLES).

MSM gives permeability to your cells allowing them to better eliminate waste material, toxins and excess cellular fluids. Permeability also lets healing nutrients in.  MSM helps restore flexibility and elasticity to all cells.

MSM allows the body to more effectively take up oxygen. In the case of your lungs, the greater permeability and elasticity of cell membranes allows more air to be breathed in and oxygen to pass into the blood stream.

MSM prevents and corrects the clotting of red blood cells, allowing the blood to absorb more oxygen which also means that cells throughout the body can take up more oxygen from the blood, and therefore produce more energy.

MSM slows down and restores crosslinking in collagen.  Crosslinking in collagen is a natural process in scar formation, causing hard and often painful scar tissues.

Beyond The Basics

MSM (sulfur) even plays a role in protecting you from degenerative diseases. For example, glutathione—a potent antioxidant made by your body—requires sulfur to effectively combat free radicals.

Other compounds that depend on you having enough sulfur (MSM) include:

  • Insulin – a hormone that balances your blood sugar
  • Thiamin (Vitamin B1) – a primary factor in the metabolism of carbohydrates
  • Glucosamine – an amino sugar that we form from glucose that helps make up many of the body’s tissues including membranes in the digestive and respiratory tracts as well as synovial fluid in the joints.

Everything Works Better With MSM

MSM makes most vitamins and other nutrients more effective by improving the cellular uptake of these nutrients, and prolonging their lives. Your body can better utilize the nutrients, which makes taking dietary supplements more efficient and means less are needed.

Supplementation is The Best Choice 

Because of its nature, MSM is quickly lost from food when it is processed, cooked, frozen or stored.  The second you pick a fruit or vegetable from the tree or vine, it begins rapidly losing the MSM and of course other nutrients as well.

When your body uses the MSM molecule to produce a new cell, the MSM is lost forever.  Since we are getting far less than optimal amounts of MSM in our diets and we need to continuously replace the body’s needed supply of MSM to produce new, good, healthy cells, it makes sense to take supplemental MSM daily.

Our Recommendations

You will get maximum benefit if you take MSM twice a day, about 12 hours apart and results will be best if you take buffered vitamin C with bioflavonoids at the same time.

How Much MSM Should You Take?

For daily health and prevention of disease, we suggest at least 1,000 mg of MSM along with 1,000 mg of Calcium Ascorbate (Buffered Vitamin C) that contains bioflavonoids at least once a day.  But there are many applications for MSM that require higher dosages.

SOME SUGGESTIONS

For allergies try 5,000 mg of MSM with 2,000 to 3,000 mg of buffered vitamin C (vitamin C is considered a natural anti-histamine too) two times per day.

For osteoarthritis you could easily start with 5,000 mg of MSM and 2,000 mg of buffered vitamin C twice a day (and we highly recommend adding 1,000 mg of glucosamine two times per day, as it will help build the cushion between the joint).

But for something like muscle recovery, you may only need as much as 3,000 to 4,000 mg of MSM and 1,000 mg of buffered vitamin C twice a day.

MSM has no known toxicity so it is safe to experiment with dosages to get the desired result.

Note: Some people will experience lose stool from too much Calcium Ascorbate. Keep track of your Calcium Ascorbate intake and if you get loose stool, you will know what your tolerance level is. For example, I can take 10,000 mg over the course of the day without getting lose stool, but 5,000 mg or more at one time is too much for me.

MSM and Calcium Ascorbate can be taken with or without food.

Are There Any Negative Effects From Taking MSM?

In the first 2 weeks of taking MSM, some people may experience detoxification symptoms. This rarely happens and the most common symptoms are a mild headache and/or slight fatigue.

Remember MSM may increase your energy, so if you find yourself too energized to sleep, then you should consider taking your evening dose of MSM a little earlier.

Allergies

At one of my full day workshops, a lady came in with extremely red and watery eyes. They were so bad that my eyes started to water every time I would look at her. So I asked her if she was okay and she said it was just her allergies acting up.

Sore Muscles

Trip A. One morning on a trip to the Oregon Coast with my girlfriend we did a walk/run down the beach and back (total time 90 minutes). Then after a short break, we did a 5 mile forest hike. This was more exercise than either of us were used to in one day.

My friend warned me that she was going to be very sore the next day. I said, no you won’t and I got out my emergency travel kit and doled out 4,000 mg of MSM and 1,000 mg of Calcium Ascorbate (buffered vitamin C) for each of us.

She couldn’t believe how great she felt the next day. We could tell that we had done a lot of exercise but neither of us felt sore and stiff.

Trip B. While in Sedona, I went with another friend on a “strenuous hike” which was more like a strenuous rock climb. It was very tough, harder for her because she is shorter than I am which meant that she had to really stretch to make some of the foot holds.

We were pretty certain that we would be really sore the next day but I hoped that the 4,000 mg of MSM and 1,000 mg of Calcium Ascorbate (buffered vitamin C) that we each took would do the trick and it did. We didn’t experience the soreness that would normally accompany a climb like that.

Bee Sting Bites

“Just wanted to add my testimonial to MSM & Vit C. as an allergic reaction medicine.

I have always reacted poorly to mosquito bites & Bee stings.  Not to the point of needing to carry an epi pen but close (thank god I found MSM before I got to that stage) I haven’t been stung for many years – this year… well different story. Arthritic Pain
